Think wife's gonna be MAD !!!! HELP ME !!!!

Postby TaT2 » Wed Mar 11, 2015 8:13 pm

New to site & needing bit a help ,,,,
Wifes bike been in storage for past summer & most this winter. I had done all good things to store bike ,,, battery tender ,,, sea foam, all that good stuff, heck I even checked antifreeze. And that is where my problem begins,,,,
Long story short my wifes baby started billowing white smoke !!!! Oh no !!!! Im running to cut it off ,,, well I get bike shut off and low & behold I see a puddle of green liquid on floor of shed !!!! Oh boy am I now in really big trouble ,,, oh but it gets even better,,, I now see little bit of fire on bottom right side of motor inside body fairings ,,,, so what do I do ??? Grab handy fire extinguisher !!!! Get flames put out ,,,, dont smell either eletric or oil bunt smell ,,, good thing I hope ( fingers crossed ).
So now I let bike sit & cool down for about hour or so,,,, try & restart,,,, She starts back up with no sputtering or acting all crazy... so I shut it back down & gently push her back into her little garage.
Ok so with all that info here is my dilema,,,, Did I blow head gaskets ?? Did thermostat sezie up during long term storage ??
And lastly am I going to be in Dog house with wife ??? Im decent with a wrench,,, but kinda new to Gold Wings,,, Oops forgot to mention bike in question a 1993 1500 Aspencade.
Anyone who might be willing to give insight would be great ,,, THANKS !!!!

ok, has it done it again since the first time it happened? I would keep an eye on the temp gauge and the coolant level and if it does it again, I would suggest taking the heads off and checking the head gaskets and the engine heads. you might have the beginnings of a head gasket going out. unless someone else can suggest something else, that's what I would do.

My thought would definitely be a head gasket. With a head gasket blown out to the outside of the block, you can have coolant spraying out, as well as very hot combustion products (i.e. burning gas) forced out of a cylinder, which can light things on fire.

Don't try starting it again, you need to disassemble enough to identify exactly where the leak/fire is coming from - but it will be my guess that it's a head gasket.

What are your levels like?
Are the oil and coolant levels correct or has the oil level increased and coolant dropped, a good indicator of head gasket failure.
I'll be interested to know what you find, I've seen an awful lot of head gasket failures, car and bike, but never one that caused a fire in a few seconds.
If you keep the kill switch on and crank it over how does it sound, you might be able to hear if a cylinder is blowing or you could take the spark plugs out and see if one is fouled with oil/coolant.

Try videoing it then we could all have a look.

Sid
