PETCOCK ASSY

Postby BENJEE2112 » Fri Mar 13, 2015 5:25 am

Hi all Wingers. I just upgraded from my 82 Gl 1100 to 95 ASPENCADE/INTERSTATE?1500..... (woo-hooo). When I got it home last night,I shut it down. But it sounded like something was still running. i tracked it down to the PETCOCK ASSY. (I found the name on our manuals section) "THANX AGAIN" I opened the gas cap,and it looked like the fuel was circulating. The sound stopped until I put the cap back on,and it started again. After a while it stopped. So I'm assuming it must be a relief valve. is there something like a fuel mixer? Every time I opened the cap. It was a vacuum effect going one. Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks...Ben

There are a couple of things that you should be checking:
Make sure your vent in the fuel cap is clean; sometimes these accumulate a bit of dirt, and block the vent.
The second is to do a close inspection of the Petcock Assy. These sometimes get holes in the diaphragm, and lose their ability to put the gasoline/petrol to where it is needed.

DO the easy one first. If that does not work, come back and one of the sages will assist if you ask nicely :D

The world is not going to finish today, as it is already tomorrow in Australia and New Zealand, and other islands of foreign nations such as Guam and Samoa.

Does your bike have reverse? If so, it is an Aspencade, Interstates didn't have reverse in later years. My bike has made a noise after shutting down from a long ride a couple of times. I removed the fuel cap and it stopped. In my case, it is the CA carbon filter setup which is used to capture the fuel vapors, no tank cap vent in California. Most likely that is your problem, i.e. the tank cap vent is either plugged or partially so and is causing a vacuum in the tank which is leaking off after you shut down and making the noise......

THANKS BILL. Very helpful stuff. The touring package says Aspencade. But no reverse. I was bummed out when I found that out,but it only has 68,000 miles on it. so I got it anyway. Thanks Ben
