Squeal coming from front of bike

Post by Bobbyb02 » Sat Mar 14, 2015 11:20 pm

I am having a problem with a loud squeal coming from the front of a 1988 Goldwing GL1500. This only happens on highway speeds and will go away when I get off the highway and back down to about 30 mph. The noise gets quiter as speed drops. My thoughts are it might be a wheel bearing or the speedometer drive. The last owner told me the speedometer cable was replaced. I appreciate any help.
Take care

Do you perhaps have a deer whistle under the front of the fairing? Just a thought....... Lift the front wheel off the ground with the bike on the center stand and a small jack under the front of the crankcase. Rotate the front wheel. It should be smooth with no appreciable noise. Pull the front wheel cover and check the brake shoes on both sides to make sure they are not metal to metal.

Had a pair of deer whistles under my fairing that got progressively louder with speed. Removed one and it is not heard with radio at low level. Looking through top of bar opening toward wheel there were a few wires hanging loose that also caused noise. Ty-wrapped and noise went away.

Disconnect the Speedo cable at the front wheel ,if noise goes away replace the cable or try living it. If noise doesn't go away check the Speedo drive unit , might need regreasing. You have to take front wheel off to check the drive unit.

I did have a loud squeal also on my 96SE..I removed the speedo cable, cleaned and lubed..and eventually replaced it..but the squeal continued. It turned out that my speedo itself was having issues and had to be replaced
