Fuel pump pressure GL1500?

Postby n5926g » Sun Mar 15, 2015 11:47 am

Morning guy,s
Just pulled the fuel pump out of my 90 Aspencade, to inspect, maybe replace the tank,
My last project was a BMW R1100RT which was fuel injected, and the pump pressure ran around 20-30 PSI....I have externally powered up the pump out of the Honda,Immersed it in fuel, and pumped it to another bucket..Pump runs, seems quiet enough, but Im not seeing the output stream Im accustomed to on a fuel pump.Screen is clean, and Im "assuming" that since it feeds carb,s the actual pressure would be much lower than the fuel injected bike...is there a way to confirm output? or is this just one of those things"if it pumps its good"?

The 1500 fuel pump minimum flow is 21.6 oz per minute. Time the flow into a beaker (or measuring cup) for 5 seconds then multiply it by 12 to get the per minute flow.

Normal fuel pump pressure is 1.5 psi and just dribbles out end of hose when testing with the volume method.

Typical fuel pump failure is not a quick death it will show as loss of power or stalling while underway for extended periods.

Testing the pump if not acting up is of little value. The only way with 100% certainty is to have a gauge teed in when bike stalls/loses power or through another diagnostic method while sitting on the side of road waiting for the pump to recover.
