Gas tank cap

Postby furnacedoc » Fri Jun 18, 2010 12:34 pm

Hello everyone, I have noticed that when I take the gas cap off to put gas in my tank that there is alot of pressure relieved when I remove the cap . Is this normal? sometimes when I am riding I hear what sounds like my gas tank metal popping ,like the sound from the old fashion oil cans when you would push the bottom in to dispense oil . I see there is a vent tube on the cap, where does it go and what do I need to do?

There will be a bit of pressure, but certainly shouldn't be enough that you're hearing oilcanning. You can just replace the cap, or drill a tiny hole. Have a look at this thread: Gas cap should be vented, right?

Hello, I pulled the vent tube off of the gas cap, the cap appears to have a check valve built into it, i can suck air thru the cap but can not blow back thru it, also I can not blow thru the hose, The manual shows that the vent hose goes to a canister that has another vent hose connected to it and it has a vent hose that routes down to the underside of the bike. Do you know anything about the tank? and if I should be able to blow thru the hose?

That's an evaporative canister, to hold evaporative emissions when the fuel heats up. The tank should be able to vent to it. I don't know what they're doing with the cap to allow air back in, but I'd suggest replacing the cap (they're not that expensive) or just drilling a tiny hole in it to allow the pressure to equalize.
