If the SCAN button does not work, you are not dead in the water.

You can always use the Tune/Tape Selector Switch on the left handlebar.

Maybe I mistaken but pressing scan button on radio doesn't scan to next station. If you look at lcd screen you will see it change between scan and nothing. When on nothing it just pick up next station when you press tune switch on bar. When it set to scan it will go to next station. If you not press tune switch again it will go to next station after that until you press the tune button. On my bike delay is a bit longer than I like so to set presets I just hit tune switch and go directly to station (we dont have many stations here locally). Scan might be nice on the road if you just wish to channel surf and see what sounds good.

Might be as easy as spraying CONTACT cleaner NOT WD40 into the scan switch

I don't think that would be a good idea for that SCAN switch. It is not your typical metal contact type of switch. The radio needs to be dismantled to do anything to those switches.

On my 98 SE, I have to push the scan button on the panel and then hold the radio tune button down or up for a few seconds to make it scan. When it is scanning, it will flash the scan word on the dash. It will stop at a good signal for 5 to 10 seconds and then move to next good signal. if you want to stay on the channel it stops at, then click the radio tune button one time to make it stay.

When I first got my SE two years ago I thought the scan didn't work also, until I figured it out. Hope that's all it is.

Here are the two pages out of the Owners Manual that might help you figure this out:
