Indicators will not work ... Help! Please!

Postby PedroTQ » Fri Apr 03, 2015 6:34 pm

G'day to All,

Had my 15 mostly dressed up after a good birthday, filled the radiator up with fresh coolant, started her up and she spluttered a bit but after a couple of minutes she was purring sweetly, topped the coolant up, let her warm right up until the radiator fans came on which took about 20 minutes and checking most of the electrics whilst waiting (except for the brake lights).

The only problem was the right indicators would not work, that should be a simple fix .... Wrong!

I planned to fix the indicators and set up for a carby sync when I fired her up next.

I have followed the Honda manual checklist, took all day and I am no better off. Help from anyone would be appreciated :D

Symptoms;

Now neither Left or Right indicators work.

Hazard lights work when ignition in "Acc" but not when ignition "On" (Have not tried "Park").

Have swapped the hazard and indicator flasher units over - No change.

Page 19-26 of the Honda Manual;
Speed pulse from the speed sensor - WHT/BLK (+) (to Earth) - Front wheel turned slowly, Ignition switch ON - 0-10 Volts pulse.
I get a constant 0.03 Volts.

Cancel output - BLU/BLK (+) (to Earth) - Ignition switch ON & p-BRN connector connected -
-Turn signal operated L or R - 0 Volts should register.
I get 0.25 Volts.

Cancel output - BLU/BLK (+) (to Earth) - Ignition switch ON & p-BRN connector connected -
Turn signal switch PUSHED - Battery Voltage should register.
I get 0.4 Volts.
...............................................

I guess that horrible little "Turn Signal Cancel Control Unit" that is such an "AH" to get at is shot! ???

Is there a way to bypass this little Gem ??

Just thought I would get a second opinion before ordering and waiting for a new one to arrive, then maybe find out that the problem is elsewhere ???

A couple of pics, just before I fired her up for a warm up and this morning after a day of fault finding.

All the best t All. Have a Happy Easter.
Peter.

The majority of electrical problems are due to improper repair/reassembly/addition of electrical devices.

Disconnect turn signal switch connector above left fan. On the wire harness side make a 3 way jumper between the pink/white-light blue-orange wires. Turn on the key if hazard lights now work correctly my best guess of problem is turn signal switch which should be replaced.

Did you start your checking with page 19-7? Turn Signals do not operate....
How far apart did you have your machine? Check those ground wires for a good ground, a bad or disconnected ground can cause a lot of weird stuff and gremlins....
Enjoy your Easter mate and let us know if and what you find.
Enjoy the ride. They are all good, just some better than others.

You learn something every day,

I had changed my globes to LED's, now looking back it is obvious that with all indicators activated as in using the hazard lights they worked, but not enough current draw with only one side selected.

I had previously bypassed the sensor in the steering head (as per photo), but that did not fix my problem, then the above dawned on me. Luckily i had previously bought a pair of LED flasher units just for this purpose but forgot all about them.

It is a pain having the flasher units right under the trunk, and since the new flasher units also incorporate a fuse i made up a wiring harness and located them under the seat.

You only learn how things work when they dont, and you have to investigate the problems and symptoms.

That"ll do it. I have never understood the rush to replace all lamps with expensive LED.

Other than the high current draw 1157 incandescent used in the running/brake lights where LED makes sense and your alternator will be a much happier camper for that one change. That one changeover will save you about 6 amps and pays for itself in electrical system health.

Just a note, the turn canceller will not work with LEDs and LED compatible flashers. The canceller still needs the current draw of incandescent bulbs, or power resistors.
