Using reverse !

Postby purchelli » Sun Apr 05, 2015 6:46 pm

I haven't had the need to use reverse yet. The operation has been explained but could you tell me if I engage reverse with engine running, engine not runnuning or doesn't matter. thanks

The engine must be running with the trans in nuetral. Pull the reverse lever to the up position and press the start button. The starter motor actually backs up the bike at about 2 mph. Since it is electric the alternator is helping supply the power.

When engaging reverse the neutral light will go out and the reverse light illuminates.

The reverse on my F6B works too, just like it did on my Harley, my 82, my Yamaha, and my Suzuki. Put bike in neutral. Lower both feet to ground. Push backward, without tipping over and viola' you got reverse!!!

When you were on the Hardley, were the violas playing some old favourite? (Like the Ring of Fire, ...and he went down, down, down into the ring of fire!" Just because everyone has trouble reversing with their feet uphill!

But I can understand everyone saying "Voila!" when you did it without tipping.

I have owned my 96 GL1500 for right at one year now, just over 20,000 miles and never use reverse, EXCEPT the one time last weekend to go about 5 feet to see if it worked. . . . too slow for my liking, and my knees and legs still work just fine ! lol :P

Really? You all must be on just really flat parts of the earth....I use mine semi-regular. Of course it does not help that I have a small hill to get the bike up out of the garage......I dig my reverse.

I use reverse all the time, a necessity for being short. My feet just do reach the ground but not enough to push backwards.

THAT is my problem....WA State is not flat....though my legs are long enough, maybe it is just my laziness. Do not want legs like Arnold Schwarzenegger when he was in his 20s ya know.

If you were to turn your bike around and back it into your garage, you could just ride it out of the garage. Then your reverse will get "worn out" like most of ours are  . I have only used mine once, and that was when a guy tried to block me in. Bet he was surprised to see my bike gone when he came back. :D

That is what I must do, back down an incline and rest bike between two post that front end can not pass through. Tight squeeze but it keeps it in the dry. Only flat spot here is a mall parking lot.

I would back in to the garage but then I would have to start the bike with the tail end pointing in to the garage and then I would have to deal with the exhaust smell.....and Mrs Mag bitchin' about the exhaust smell since her workshop is 2 bays down. Remember that previous post I did about keeping her happy makes my life happy????

Hey Mag,

I can relate to that. When "She, who must be obeyed" is unhappy, then life is miserable. Better to ride in, then not have the fumes go through everywhere when you have to start it for you to go to the shops to get her some stockings, lipstick, or hair spray

When you need it, you need it! At over eight hundred pounds, I don't care how long your legs are, this thing can be a beast to push backwards-especially up an incline. I use my reverse, but only when absolutely necessary. The extra strain on the starter and alternator has to take a toll at some point.

Absolutely, I do not use it unless I can not roll it back. So when I am ready to go, I back the back to the edge of my garage door so it shoots the exhaust outside.

And lipstick, hairspray and stockings?? We have been living on this hill for 20+....she is "comfortable" and has not done any of that for a while....unless we go out somewhere like a concert, etc., no bike involved there. I just do not want that stern look that she gives....it looks like she is thinking...."Ugh, men are so.....", lol. And I think the word "idiot" shows up around there sometimes too.

If you get a stern look for that, just think what you can get for leaving the seat up.   You could do worse. :D Some times you just gotta do what you gotta do. ;) If Momma aint happy, nobody's happy!

I do not leave the seat up, nope, do not do it....that is all I need is her cursing my name when she can't get her arse outa the toilet (though a funny picture indeed, I would snicker).

When reversing up, it is always better if the seat is ready - but, do you notice that you always have to cycle the seat, while she always expects the seat to suit. I have overcome this by putting a cover on, and making sure the cover is in place, all the time. That way, she has to do some action before climbing on.

I wired in back-up strobe lights and also an audible alarm that I can silence if need be. (Some people just don't see the flashing lights)
