Intermittent starting

Postby Graywolf » Mon Apr 06, 2015 7:27 am

I have an interesting problem. Sometimes the bike will start right up and then the next time, I try to start it, I get nothing. I don't get a neutral light and sometimes the reverse light comes on. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'll be the first to tell you I don't know much about 1500's, but your problem may be a weak battery. From everything I've read about these bikes, they're very sensitive to battery condition.

The first thing I would do is pull the battery out, put it on a bench and run a thorough charge through it while I took an hour or so to clean every electrical connection I could reach. Battery terminal wires, grounds, anything I can see that could contribute to poor electricity delivery to the starting system.

You may also want to consider having the battery tested to see what kind of shape it's in. Either way, put the battery back in after a full charge and try to start the bike. I've seen dozens of examples of where a 1500 owner had starting problems fixed by a new battery.
I am wrong as often as I am right concerning what is wrong with someone else' motorcycle without having seen the machine in person. Guessing with limited information, as to the source of the trouble, is sketchy at best.

Next time this happens,Operate the reverse lever several times from down to up and back. This will(should) operate its switch. They do fail.
If doing this results in being able to start the bike again, look into inspecting the switch and its actuator arm or replacing it.
The switch is close to the lever. You have to pull a bunch of plastic and the lever off to get to it.
