Dash lights all stay on after starting up…then go off and take the headlight with it..

Postby vv0350 » Mon Apr 13, 2015 1:01 pm

Greetings:
We took a three day trip on our 97 GL1500 over the weekend..morning of the second day we were camped in Texas and got up to a bit of fog..anyway…started the bike…Normally, all the dash lights come on as you begin to turn the key and then go off when you actually start the bike..this time, the dash lights stayed on..even the "R" light stayed on…then, in a few minutes, they went out..whatever it was is ok now?..wrong..we were soon notified that we no longer had a headlight…so, all the other lights; brake, turn, marker, ets..worked so we proceeded on with the trip..about lunch time, we stopped and started the bike and wolla…now we have a headlight and the dash lights go on and off after it starts up just like it always did..
Do not want this to keep happening…any good ideas out there..??

Two issues prolly going on here, first the self test function of warning lights not going out. That function is controlled by the LCD and "97 was a known problem child for LCD's. The fog mentioned (humidity) causing it.

Headlight not working is prolly the start button, if it happens again give it a jiggle and see if you can get it to come back on or cut-out.
This is what I do

So, I have looked it up..and cannot find LCD as a component on this bike…In my old electronic guy days it stood for Liquid Crystal Display but that doesn't seem revenant to your comments…? ??

The LCD being referred to here is your radio/clock display. They're notorious for being susceptible to changes in humidity.

It refers to the blueish gray rectangular space between the tach and the speedo that displays the time and radio station. That is your LCD display.

Ok, now it is all coming together….you know, also our LCD CLOCK has not worked right since 2004…sometimes it comes on with the correct time…sometimes a completely wrong time…always wondered about that…all seems connected…and connected to humid conditions...
