Will Not start if in gear

Postby Comey » Mon Apr 20, 2015 3:34 pm

My 1994 Goldwing GL1500 SE will not start when in gear.
Even with clutch fully engaged.Must be in neutral to start.
Is this normal? Do not know histroy as I have only owned it
for 2 months.

As the clutch lever is pulled all the way in and close to the bar a clicking noise of switch should be heard. Worn clutch lever, aftermarket levers, oversized grips can prevent the engagement of switch which in turn will not allow it to start in gear.

The first click heard when pulling lever is for cruise control disengagement.
This is what I do

There are two micro switches for the clutch lever.

One is to disengage the cruise control and it is set to operate as when the clutch lever is pulled in slightly.

The second is to allow for starting the engine while in gear and it is set to engage when the clutch lever is pulled in completely.

You should hear two clicks as you pull in the lever. One click as you start to pull in the lever and one click as you get the lever pulled in completely. If you do not hear the clicks and your hearing is normal, then one or both of the switches are not operating. Or, if you hear one as you start to pull the clutch and not the other, then either the second switch, the one that allows you to start the engine in gear, is defective or you have large hand grips that are not allowing the lever to be pulled all the way in or the clutch pivot bushing is worn.

Some aftermarket hand grips are too large in diameter to allow the clutch lever to go full travel.

Is this with the side stand down? If so, it is normal. :)

Clutch lever does not depress switch. When lever pulled in
all the way it just barely touches switch. I glued a small piece
of plastic to lever boss using cpvc glue and now work fine.
Don't know how long the glue will hold, but good for now.
Wondering if the lever may have been changed in the past?
The bushing in the lever is snug and appears to fit ok.

If the levers are chrome then they were changed. Also there is s very small adjustment on the switch.

YEAH!!! Some one actually posted that they found the fix. :D Wish more would do that. :) I also wish that I had noticed that you are my "neighbor". I was reading the post, but not the "where from". Learn something new every day. ;)
