Wheezing sound after riding

Postby Tagg » Wed Apr 22, 2015 10:16 pm

Does anyone know what the wheezing type sound is on a 1500 after a ride and returning to the garage ? I have noticed it a few times. It sounds like an air leak but appears not to be due to air shock pressure staying the same. It will last like 2-3 seconds and does it a few times. Thanks.

Check the vent on the fuel tank. Is it a California model?

Does the sound stop if you open the gas cap?

Not sure about the Calif model. The air filter does not have the Calif type extra filter in the center of it.
The gas cap has a vacuum to it when I open it to refuel, is it possibly a blocked vent on the cap. Haven't checked if it will stop when gas cap is open. Its 38 F here in the Pittsburgh area today.

The reason I asked about the CA model is that it has a closed vent system rather than an open vent in the gas cap. The hose on the cap is an overflow I believe on 49 state models. I get the same noise on my CA model on occassion, but not every time I ride. Check for a blocked fuel cap vent.

I was having the same noise and also some fuel dripping from one of the black drain lines on the right side on the bottom of the wing (not always but intermittently). Spent over $500 to have the floats rebuilt but still did the same. Took the gas cap off and soaked it in Sea-Foam over night, blew it out with a air-compressor and the drain hose that hooks to it, problem solved for me.

May I suggest a severe reduction in your tobacco habit.

My first thought was try using reverse when backing up a hill, even a slight one ! Lol

It's just excess pressure being released through the gas cap, as the heat from the engine heats up the fuel in the tank.
It can/will continue for some time after riding in warmer weather until the fuel cools back down.
