Broken Speedometer

Postby waynesturt » Thu Apr 30, 2015 12:22 am

Hello fellow wing riders,
I recently bought a 1998 Goldwing SE. This morning the speedo quit working along with my cruise control. Can anyone give advice/suggest as to how involved this may be to fix??

Thanks
Wayne

Is it the speedo, or the cable or gears at the front wheel? These two are definitely easier to do, than replacing the speedo, as well as easier on the pocket.

The first thing I would check (and the most common failure item) is the speedometer cable. It's relatively inexpensive, and when it fails, you will lose your speedometer. Your cruise control works off your speedometer, so if it is not working, neither is your cruise control.

I just replaced mine..things that don't work if the speedo cable is broken CC, AVC and turn signal auto-off. Pain to get cable out and on..due to it's location behind and under the dash..read my thread below..

I have replaced my speedo cable three times on my '99 gl1500se.
I have replaced the nylon gear at the front wheel once.

It is more of a pain than really difficult because it is just hard to get your hand in to where you need it to be.
It is hard to get the threads lined up when you get in their.

I do recommend a Honda cable, because the two off brand cables just did not last long.
