Popping and Farting

Postby PedroTQ » Sun May 03, 2015 11:31 pm

G'day to Everyone,

Finished getting my 88 GL-1500 on the road, rebuilt the carbs with Randakk's kits.

Have done a couple of hundred miles on her now, but she popps and farts, especially when changing gear going up, not so much coming down gears. I don't think I have heard her pop whilst decelerating, just when changing gear.

Any suggestions on where to start my investigations, I plan to tear off the Tupperware and service her at 500 miles, fix the speedo, a few electrical annoyances, check the spark plugs that were new etc.

Thanks in advance, Peter.

I'd take another look at my carb settings. :(

If you have the pulse AIR system (chrome tubes that enter each corner of cylinder heads) a malfunction in that vacuum controlled system can cause that popping. Air injection is supposed to be temporarily halted when RPM's peak and begin to fall as when shifting.

This sort of popping is generally associated with a mixture that is too lean. Failing carburetor problems, if the air injection system is malfunctioning as mentioned, it's possible it could also be the cause.

My 88 is popping only at idle, and not all the time. Has a strong exhaust smell so I was thinking it was running rich. Would the AIR system cause this also? Runs great otherwise. It did not have the recall done, so I went with #60 low speed jet to get rid of the hesitation. All vacuum hoses have been replaced.

Thoughts?

Thanks Guys,

I plan to tear her down soon so I just have to put up with the embarrassing sounds.

As previously mentioned in another thread by myself, one of the PO's done a funny with the carbs, for what reason I know not.

They drilled out the brass plugs on the bottom of the carbs (to do or achieve something) then sealed them back up. May be this is adding to the cause?

I purchased another set of 88 carbs from e-bay and will overhaul them, then swap them out during the first service.

Best regards, peter.

Horribly shoddy work by a clueless individual as to what they were doing. That particular passage is for the starter jet when pulled during cold start to bleed vacuum off the slide.

G'day to All!

I have done 414 Miles so far on her, the wife sends me down for a bottle of milk from the local shops and I return after a 70 Mile trip ( I seem to get lost on the way).

The Popping seems to be going away all by itself, went for a ride yesterday and it only popped a couple of times just before I got home.

Starting to get used to her now, turning right (which would be your equivalent of turning left) is still shaky as I am also changing gear mid manoeuvre.

Raining today so its time to repair a typewriter that some young lady left with me way over 6 months ago.

All the best to All, Peter.
