Goldwing 1500 Engine/Induction noise

Postby johng_1974 » Mon May 04, 2015 1:23 pm

hi all, my first post..
Brought a 44K 1991 Interstate last weekend, with a tapping noise as described by previous owner.. Rode it 550 miles home from Scotland with no problems at all, 2 up  feels as I would imagine a wing to feel really, in terms of power and torque
Fuel economy for the whole trip was around 40mpg .. but I was reasonably gentle, on the highway I was 60-70mph and the other 50% was hilly but steady ..

The tapping noise only occurs under load.. off throttle the bike is silent.. this suggests it is not tappets at all..
My first thought (and it sounds exactly like this for those that have experienced it) is a leaking exhaust gasket.. which could help explain the silence on overrun..
I would hazard a guess the noise is not every firing stroke but every 3rd or 6th, but that's a guess..
I got the bike off the floor and stripped the panels off today, Expecting to find a blown header or just a loose pipe to head join.. nothing. all looks fine and no blow-by from that area..

I put a stethoscope on the heads and nothing wrong there.. while doing this I noticed the noise.. it's from the middle of the engine, but carb area..

I will continue stripping it down, but just wondered if anyone had a thought or two..
The idle is very up and down too... 500-750 revs in waves really.. I.e. it drops to 500 and recovers then repeat the cycle

Hoping this is something easy.. would a misfire cause a back fire up through a carb? it could almost be that noise..
thanks
John

There is a hose that attaches to bottom right front of air box and is the intake source of air for the pulse air and shot air systems and if not connected will give a loud gurgling type noise.
This is what I do
Local and need repair help with your 1500, Valkyrie or ST please PM

While your about all those hoses..suspect any vacuum line with a sharp 90°bend to be bad.Usually very weak on the outside edge.

Set your idle speed up a bit and see if the surge smooths out. My bike will surge if the idle is set too low.

One thing that might help with that small surge is to back your idle adjust all the way off first then bring it back up to normal 800 +/-80rpm. It did mine and I've seen it fix two others. On all three the idle adjust cable was almost frozen, very very stiff.

hi all.
back to bike tonight for an hour of gentle work..

Spiral, I tried turning it tonight, but my idle cable is almost seized solid... have applied some plus gas and left over night.. I am getting some movement already now at the business end :)
I don't know the cylinder layout of these bikes, so below I am referencing odd cylinders on the right side, #1#3#5 and even left, #2#4#6 .

noise problem diagnosed !

The noise is much more than I said yesterday.. think a Harley at tick over! with panels removed and the bike in a garage it's an obvious sound...
definitely coming from the right inlet tract area..
the small steel pipes, guessing part of the PAIR system?, they are joined to manifold/plenum with rubber pipes.. 2 rubber pipes are completely shot, 3 are good, and one I cannot see..
the shot ones are right side of bike, cylinders #1 and 3# ? i.e. front and middle..
:) a result..
I also think the front right airbox pipe mentioned by CT wasn't joined.. it just looked like it hasn't been for some time..

Cyl#1 pipe sort of visible here:

right central pipe here:

hoping I can change these easily in-situ.. the steel pipe for cyl 1# .. can I remove it? here is its other end. haven't tried to force it upwards so far.. removing this would make life a bit easier..

the 10mm bolt has been taken out

A couple more questions folks.. would the air leak caused by these pipes have been detrimental to the bike's running?
apart from fatigue, could something have hastened their lifespan? (3 of the other 4 look in better shape)

does anyone know what this black part is? it is a bad pic, but there is slight damage:

thanks
John

You have a California model. Last pic is part of the emissions control, air vent control valve.

No major restrictions, just a charcoal cansiter to capture the fuel vapors and no vent in the gas cap.

thanks all, yes I did some research last week and as said no problems with a CA model :)

I have replaced the two broken PAIR rubber pipes, on cyl #1 and #3 .. very hard to do in-situ, but easier right now than a carb removal..
bike sounds perfect now :)

Last night took cambelt cover off. belts look ok but going to change them later today.. right belt is loose...

Have removed 4 plugs so far, 1 3 5 and 6 - all look quite white to my eye.. maybe cyl#3 is nearer to normal tan.. I will remove the other 2 when I can..

Check the timing belt idler pulleys to make sure the bearings are good, if there is any question, replace them.

thanks Bill.. they check out fine..

what an easy job to change belts! compared to my normal hours of work with European SOHC cars :D

Bike going back together.. will keep an eye on plug colour from now on..
airbox all back together with all the pipes in place (that right front corner one is almost impossible unless the fan is removed first)
