Throttle Adjustment

Postby revtmuller1 » Tue May 05, 2015 8:22 am

Just wondering if there a way to adjust the throttle sensitivity on my '99 Gl 1500 SE? Seems that it is hard to gradually apply the throttle with much control at times. Maybe it's just me???

You might try lubricating the throttle cables for a start. If you have a lot of miles on the bike, the throttle cable can be worn to where it binds a bit and should be replaced.

PS easiest way IMHO to do that is to open the switch on the handle bars and then you can see the cables slowly drip some oil/solvent etc. into the cable housing. Work teh throttle a bit to move the oil into the cable.

This could be old/wearing/fraying throttle cables, giving you too much friction. I've never had an issue making delicate power setting changes on my GL1500.

The bike has 51,000 miles on it. I wouldn't think the cable would be frayed yet. Would it???

How much slack do you have at the throttle? I find a little slack helps. If yours is tight (where ANY throttle grip movement raises the engine speed), you could try adjusting the slack. Look under the right switch pod, you'll see the throttle cables - the outboard one has a slack adjuster. Slacken off the little lock nut, adjust the hex barrel toward the grip 1/2 to 1 turn, and try it again. That may fix it for you. It's worth a try, and it's free, right? 8-)

Hey RevT, what was the outcome? Did it resolve the problem?

Hi redial, I have been too busy to fiddle with it yet. I'll try to get to it soon and post my results. God bless.

Just applied the adjustment Mh434 suggested and it did what I was wanting to do! I am happy with the throttle response now. Thanks again everybody!
