GL1500 Axle grease questions

Post by Wingsconsin » Fri May 08, 2015 9:07 am

Right now I have my GL1500 apart for a tire change. I will be re-assembling it over the weekend and I want to be sure to get it ready for a long trip (3500+ miles in 7 days) --

In the past I have used a variety of grease to lube the axles and brake sliders pins as I put it back together.

Currently I have White lithium grease ---

OR --

Moly 60

Do you think one is better than the other for this purpose ?

The axle doesn't really need lubricating, as nothing moves against it. That said, I put a thin layer of multipurpose grease on it when assembling, to prevent wear where it contacts the wheel bearing inner races, as well as prevent corrosion.

The Moly paste is a really specialized grease - it is intended for surfaces that are pressed against one another, but do not move relative to one another (or move very little) - for instance drive splines, where the final drive meshes with the rear wheel.

I do grease the axles just to prevent rusting. While you have it apart do use the Moly60 for final drive flange splines.

I use moly each time. I have a good supply of it thankfully.
