how many coils on a GL1500

Postby t-bar12 » Wed May 13, 2015 3:22 pm

I have noticed a "hesitation" from the engine, when I am holding the accelerator at about 30 mph. It feels intermittent, and usually once the engine is quite warm.
Some mates suggested it might be time to change the coils (after 107,000 miles or so).
How many coils are there on a 6-cyclinder?
Is there a step-by-step guide for checking / replacing them?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give . . .

There are three coils, each coil runs two plugs. Before running to change out coils, first do some cheaper things: change the plugs! You might want to also run the bike in the dark, and spray a mist of water on the plug wires and boots - visible sparks indicate cracked wires or boots that need replacing.

I have already replaced the plugs. I am traveling for business right now - but when I get a chance, I will try running it in the dark and spraying a mist of water - to see if there are any wires or boots that need replacing. Thanks!
(I still think it might be something more serious than that - but will start there.)

If you think its electrical do a thorough check of ALL the electrical connections on the bike including ground wires. This is a time consuming process but with the miles you have your bound to find something. Plugs rarely go bad but its a good idea to pull them and see how they look. If you see one that is out of sorts then it could be the plug or something farther back in the ignition. If you are cleaning ALL the electrical connections the coils aren't to hard to get to but you don't want to go digging them out unless you are sure that is your problem, you can do a resistance test with them on the bike. Your manual shows the procedure.

You say it hesitates, at a steady throttle. Sounds more like lurching. How's the fuel filter and air filter? Have you run some good carb cleaner through a few tanks of fuel? It could be a slightly dirty carb mixed with some driveline lash.

Maybe a good Italian tune up will help. Carbon build up can be an issue on a high mileage engine. So many GL riders ride their bikes like a creampuff (not saying you do) and never run them above 3000rmp at a gentle easy throttle.. When was the last time you redlined the engine under hard acceleration through the first 2 or 3 gears. Blow that sucker out!!

Thanks, Otto. Sounds like some good ideas to try - before I start looking at the coils. I will follow your advice, as soon as I return from several weeks of business travel. Thanks much!
