First, check all the antenna connections from the radio out to the antenna. Unplug each one, clean them and make sure they are seated solidly.

Also check the antenna itself - is it loose?

Is the reception overall bad, or do you get crackling? Is AM reception strength the same as FM?

I also had almost nonexistent reception on my 88...When I removed the seat,I found the antenna cable was routed badly and was severed right where it crossed over the frame.

Mine had less than half the reception that my car did.The severed antenna cable still had a piece of center wire hanging out of it.that was the antenna. Its probably easiest to just unplug the antenna from the radio and measure resistance from the center pin to the antenna rod.

Does anyone know what the resistance should be for good or bad antenna wire when measured between the antenna and the male pin going into the radio?

As I recall, there should be no continuity from the antenna rod to ground (you will notice the black insulator between the mount and the rod)and have continuity from the rod all the way to the center pin that plugs into the radio.
I would expect to see very low resistance. It is just a piece of fine wire about 10 feet long, maybe a few ohms at most.
