1988 GL1500 transmission noise ?

Postby bigron57 » Wed May 20, 2015 5:49 pm

bought a 1988 GL 1500 Goldwing about 8 months ago, run fine other than the little stumble starting out which is a common carb issue I read about, but the tranny is a little noisy going from 1st to 2nd all other gears are fine is that normal ?

The transmissions are not the quietest, slickest things you'll find. What kind of noise are you hearing?

Also: Go find a hill somewhere. With the bike in neutral, point the bike up the hill, listen for a noise. Then turn around and point the bike downhill, and do the same. See if the sound changes.

It just sounds a little noisy going into 2nd gear, other than the rest of the gears.

What kind of oil do you run? I went with synthetic and the thig was noisy as heck. Changed to Delo and it stays quiet half of the year....the heat must thin it out even though it's not dirty. I toss in some new oil first week of August and i'm good for the year. They make noise......turn your stereo up a bit and you'd never know it's happening. All the posts here about clunky noise say your bike is gonna have clunky noise.........when you break down and the bike won't move THEN, you got problems!!!!!! Ride that bike hard, it can handle a little clunking.....you musta never owned a Harley if clunking and banging noises are scaring you...... :D

I have owned a Harley, V-max, and others never expected my Goldwing to be so noisy, I know Harleys do. I'll just ride it I guess.
