Reverse Troubles 1999 se

Postby Winger 99 » Mon May 25, 2015 6:29 pm

Hi,
Having trouble with my reverse light, when i pull my lever all the way back the neutral light goes out but reverse light wont come on and no movement of bike when i hit the starter button. When the reverse lever is back so far and neutral light comes back on then the bike decides to move backward when starter button id pushed but no reverse light. Any idea what may be happening here without taking every thing apart. I had trouble with this last year and had to jiggle the lever for the reverse light but not now. I can hear a relay or something click when lever is pulled back so far but not all the way back.

Does the reverse light turn on for a brief moment when you first turn the key to ON?

The most common cause of this problem is a failed reverse switch - I just replaced this on my own GL1500.

Reverse Switch
Reverse Switch

You have to remove the side panel (and reverse lever) to get to this switch. They are available at Cyclemax, who keeps them in stock as they are a common failure item: http://cyclemax.com/inc/sdetail/gl1500_ ... 744/188751

Disconnect the switch from its connector, then test - when the reverse lever is in normal position, the brown/white wire should have continuity with the black/white wire. When the reverse lever is in the reverse position, the brown/white wire should have continuity with the white/blue wire (this is the one that usually fails).

Managed to get the reverse switch off and tested as you stated.Did not have any continuity at normal position when testing as you stated. It did however have continuity when in reverse position. I used contact cleaner with air at a hole in switch then wd-40 and contact cleaner again
managed to get this to work for me. I am not sure how long this will last but at least if problem happens again I will know where the problem is.
Thanks again and ride safe

You might want to order a replacement for when it does fail (and it will). :) That's what I did, when mine started getting balky. Every time I took things apart however, everything would test good, and a few days later, my reverse would start working only intermittently again. I figured it was probably that switch, so I ordered one.

So this year, when it failed totally, I pulled it open, tested it and figured out the switch was bad, and had the replacement on hand to throw in its place.

Had the same trouble next day with no reverse light coming on ordered a new switch but that don't seem to be the problem. The only way
i can get reverse to work is when i move the handle forward just as the neutral light comes back on. Anywhere else i can check for troubles.

Thanks

You may want to adjust the cables for the reverse.
How to adjust the cables can be found here in my post: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=25400&p=141686#p141686
