88 GL 1500 Electrical Problem

Postby tek8550 » Tue Jun 29, 2010 7:27 am

Just bought an 88 GL1500 and the clock and radio wont hold its memory. checked the fuses and the acc. fuse was missing. When I replaced the fuse the whole electrical system came alive, dash lights, headlights, taillights, running lights as if the ignition switch was turned on,but it was in the off position. Tried a new ignition switch, still the same problem. Any help.

I have no idea why everything is coming on without the key, but I would be 90% sure the radio memory issue is due to ab bad 5Amp fuse located next to the main fuse box. There are two 5 amp fuses in a little box next to the main fuse panel and one of them keeps the radio memory alive. Despite you saying all fuses are good, I suspect you have not looked at these two seperate 5 amp fuses outside of the main fuse box.

Let me clarify my statement. I checked the fuses in the main panel. That is where I replaced the missing accessory fuse that made everything come alive. I have not been able to locate the fuses yoy are refering to. To the right of the fuse panel is the relay panel, there is nothing to the left. Thanks Tom

Tom, they are located on/around the starter solenoid next to the main fuse box. Atleast that was my understanding from previous topics, I have an 1800 not a 1500 but have seen this question asked several times, the photo that wingman sent in another post showed it to be a small plastic box on the starter solenoid with the 2 fuses inside.

Gary, I found the fuses you are refering to. I removed the battery and the battery box and they were tucked in behind them. They looked good, but I replaced them anyway.Still no memory. A PO has rewired the turning lamps to make them fulltime running lights and I think that may be where my problem is. The accessory fuse in the main fusebox has been pulled. When I replace it is when everything lights up as if the ignition switch has been turned on. It will even start without a key. I am about ready to give up and just ride. Work on it this winter when the snow flies. thanks, Tom
