Engine will not stay running without the choke on

Postby ralphh » Wed Jun 03, 2015 1:41 pm

My 89 GL1500 will only stay running with the choke on. We took the carbs off and all appeared to be ok. So we just cleaned them and put them back on, but it still does the same thing. Any suggestions on where to start. Thanks

Typical symptom of clogged pilot jet (s ). Those jets have a small orifice and if they or the passages for them are clogged then you will have the symtom you described.

may also be caused by a vacuum leak, possably the rubber mounting boots could be so hard they will not seal. I replaced mine last winter on a 2000 and they were as hard as rock..

Just a few thoughts :D

Thanks for the reply. Can you tell me where to locate the pilot Jet, and is it an item that I can replace or clean. I bet that is the main problem. The engine has a sound like it is a vacuum leak, which is probably the mounting boot because we have not been able to find any hoses that are bad.

All jets are in the carb float bowl and require removal and disassembly of carbs. If you've had the carbs off then you know how to do that, now take them apart and clean everything. It's nice to have a manual, or at least the pages from one, for the carb rebuild. You should replace all the rubber as well. Randaks sells a great kit for the 1500. Well worth the money. May just want to double check with them about the fit on your 89 carbs. They changed a few things in 90 and on.

Here is the a link to the DIY section but I don't see anything on the carbs.
