Voltage regulator

Postby nedntrish » Thu Jun 04, 2015 9:12 pm

I have a 91 1500GL. I am trying to find where the voltage regulator is located. According to my Clymer repair manual, I should be checking it but I can't find it on the bike.

What happened was I took the bike to the car wash. I tried to be carful as to not spray in the engine or on the dash. Afterward, I went to the hardware store and when I went to leave my battery was dead. It's been a week, I would think that the water would be dried up by now.

I haven't removed and opened up the alternator yet, but I probably will.

Any thoughts?

There is a regulator/rectifier in the altornator. But when I google it, and when I went to wingstuff.com the pics simply don't match. They look more like what I would expect in my car.

That's a fact..the gl 1500 charging system is a slightly modified car alternator...Its just the front is coupled to the engine rather than belt driven.
The guts of it are quite standard..
It's not terribly hard to remove...Unhook the battery and then the 2 wires from the rear of the alternator...just 3 mounting bolts and it wiggles out.

The voltage regulator is internal to the alternator. It is soldered both to the brush holder and rectifier and is not a separate user serviceable part from Honda.
This is what I do

It's also quite possible that a previous owner has put an aftermarket alternator on your bike, which would mean it does not match up with any Honda drawing or manual.

Every test that I ran by the book is pointing to the alternator being out. As soon as I find a trailer to put it on its going to the shop. Will post updates.
