gl1500 brake/signal lights

Postby wolfie3491 » Thu Jul 01, 2010 5:03 am

Have a 1996 GL1500A. Developed problem where when in neutral, all lights function correctly. When bike is in gear, turn signal indicators on dash light up slightly, & when applying turn signals, they flash rapidly through the spoiler brake light only. When applying brakes, turn signal lights only come on solid. Cruise control will come on but not set. Have checked all bulbs, and replaced brake switch on handlebar. Any thoughts? Could it be gear position sensor?

Sounds like a bad earth on the rear lights.. Try running a seperate wire from the negative terminal on the battery to the earth on the rear lights and see if this solves the problem. If it does then you need to search for the bad earth, if it changes nothing, then the problem is not with the earth..

Yup, the symptoms you describe are classic open/bad ground symptoms.

Did you find where the bad earth connection was? or just run a new wire?

Glad to hear you fixed the problem.

Didn't find the problem. Ran test ground to all 4 (excluding spoiler) brake lights, then found only needed to go to either upper or lower to make things work. Ran new ground under seat to the ground bolt and all is well.
Again, thanks for your help.

I had the exact same problem. Rear lights worked fine when in neutral, but when in gear, running lights were very dim and signal lights didn't work (they blinked very rapidly and were very dim). Also my cruise control didn't work. Luckily, I had a shop manual for my bike with complete wiring diagram. I traced all the grounds for the rear of the bike to one connector under the seat. I disconnected it, cleaned it all up, sprayed it with electrical cleaner and let it dry. Then clipped it back together. Everything's been working perfectly ever since. Drove from Wisconsin out to New Hampshire and back through Canada with no issues. We went through some pretty heavy rain too. So I'm fairly confident it's taken care of (knock on wood).

I hope this helps others with the problem.
