Clunk noise on acceleration in 4th gear

Postby revtmuller1 » Sun Jun 21, 2015 4:36 pm

Hi, I have a 1999 GL 1500SE with 53,000 miles. Yesterday while driving in city traffic I noticed a clunking while accelerating in 4th gear after coasting for a bit. It seemed to happen consistently. Anything I need to consider or look at? Thanks.

Most of the time this is caused by a universal joint that is wearing out. However, it would be worth checking the splines on the universal joint, driveshaft, final drive input, final drive output, and rear wheel for wear. Insufficient lubrication on any of these can cause wear that will show up as a "clunk" as you describe.
