Speedometer troubles

Hi all ,
Recently my speedometer stopped working , well actually the needle stopped moving , it started by going nuts every once in a while and then it just dropped to " 0 " no longer moving , my odometer is still counting the kilometers and the trip meter works too , i checked the cable just to make sure , and i checked the gear in the wheel , everything is ok but the needle isn't moving , am i looking at the whole cluster thing or could it be just the speedometer sensor near the cluster ? anyone ever had problem and could comfirm what was wrong ?
Thanks in advance .

P.S : I forgot to mention that the automatic volume control on the radio no longer work which is probably normal since the speedo needle indicates that i'm not moving , and so does the flashers are not automatically stopping once you get to a certain speed , again probably caused by a speedo indicating " 0 " .

Frank !!!

When you said that you checked the cable, how exactly did you do that?
I've had a speedo cable break on a car inside the cable housing and was just sitting there spinning.
I would unhook from the dash and wheel, then spin it to see if it actually spins. If not, it's a quick fix.

BTW..if you do have to change out the cable, tie a string on the end so that when you pull it through, you can pull the new one back using the string.

If the odometer is still counting then the cable and the drive in the wheel are likely okay. Your problem seems to be in the speedo itself which is likely a whole lot harder and more expensive to fix than a busted cable. Sorry but can't help you there.

You should also notice that without a speed indication your cruise won't work either. You've already found out about the signals.

yep..new speedo in your future..you could take it apart and see what's broken but unlikely you can fix it..

Thank you all , i'll start by changing the speedometer sensor in the cluster ( just in case i'm lucky ) if not , well i'll start looking for a cluster complete !!!!
I'll update the results when done , thanks again !!!!

You might get lucky and have a facility that can repair speedos. I could not get a replacement for one on an old van that I have, and took it out and sent it off for repairs. Not cheap, but less than a replacement.

$67.37 to be exact. Used the information in DIY on this forum to change dash lights to LED for guidance on replacing the speedometer. A couple of hours and up and running again.

If its your speed sensor they are available for around $33.00 at cyclemax

I definately have to change the whole cluster , i dismantled the dash last week after verifying the gear , the cable, the speedo , i opened the cluster , try a new speed sensor and it wasn't it either , after a few hours of playing with the connectors and wires , i found that there's a bad connection in the cluster's electronic circuit plate and it doesn't sell by itself so you have to buy the whole cluster , thanks anyway for your help it was appreciated !!!
