Sounds like the dogs on the shift slider or 4th gear are worn. 5th gear uses the same slider as 4th, but the dogs are on the opposite side so it's possible that side is OK while 4th is not. Interesting that it kicks hard enough to get it back to third, instead of just no gear (i.e. pseudo-neutral). It could also be the shifter fork is worn, but odd for it to be worn on only one side like that.

If you put the bike in neutral, engine idling, with the bike sitting on a hill, facing upward, then do the same thing with it facing down the hill, do you hear any kind of grinding/mechanical noise coming from the transmission?

I agree, probably the shifting fork. Not a cheap repair. Do you have a heel/toe shifter on the bike?

No it does not have a heal toe shifter. Why?

Heel toe shifters encourage "vigorous" shifting which can end up in bent shift forks inside the transmission. You can apply a lot more force to the shift mechanism by stamping down on a heel toe shifter than by lifting a stock shifter with your toe.

Try shifting with more force, and see if it still pops out.

Oil change recently, and did it change after that? Different oil?

Yes he did change the oil to synthetic oil .he didn't notice until the end of last year .he thought it was the way he was shifting causing it to happen .but this riding season it will not stay in 4 gear at all.we in our local group have heard of this before happening to some other wing riders when they tried synthetic oil ,so we told him to change back to the HP4 Honda oil and see if that makes a difference.i don't know the results of the front wheel on an up grade or down grade checking for noise as of this posting. Hopefully I will find out tomorrow night. Thank you all for your help & sugestions so far. I will keep everyone apprised of what I learn from him tomorrow.

I would be interested to know why changing to synthetic oil would cause the popping out of gear problem. I have been using synthetic oil in my 99 1500 for the last135,000 miles of its 142,000 life with no such issue, except when my left foot gets lazy and doesn't shift with authority. :D :D

Agreed!
Thing is once it starts popping out it usually goes bad fast.No going back after it pops out a few times.

If I'da known it would last this long,I'da taken better care of it.
