Repacked my steering head bearings

Post by Bobsiler » Fri Jul 03, 2015 9:29 pm

So I used the article in the DYI section and everything went great. It made it very easy. It was my first time doing them as I bought the bike about 4 months ago. 1 question though when I checked the adjustment when I was done as shown in the pic everything feels good no movement when grabbed by the forks. If I grabbed the wheel out in front of the forks I get some minimal play. Bad bearings? They look fine didn't see anything obvious.

Could be your fork bushings are worn if the bearings are tight.
If I'da known it would last this long,I'da taken better care of it.

If it is the head bearings there should also be movement when pulling on the forks also. Test the wheel bearings by moving the wheel side to side on a vertical plane from top and bottom.

Didn't think about the fork bushings I'll check those and the wheel bearings again. I had the front wheel off about 2 months ago when I put on a new tire on bearings seemed OK then.

My Buddy has a later model 1500 SE that he took to a shop for head brgs and forks redone. The next summer he was getting a clunking noise up front so he brought to me to re-torque the head brgs(he knew I had the tools).Any way we re-torqued them(they were ok actually)and then I started checking other stuff up front. His fork bushings were worn really bad.Either the shop didn't put oil in them or not nearly enough.
