Hello and welcome to the forum.
The bike most likely has a set of speakers in the back and it is a 'fader' knob for the front/rear speakers.

My 88 had one too..it was a fader control for the rear speakers...Strange tho, there were not any rear speakers or wiring to them from the control.I found near the end of the harness that attaches to the control a empty plug...I added my own wiring from there to the rear and put in a new set of 10 watt 4 inch speakers...I tried the new ones from Walmart...150 Watters but the stereo didn't have enough grunt to drive them...The volume actually went down...

Re rear speakers , yes there are rear speakers. The knob seems to just balance the front two. There are 7 wires in that harness 3 are on the fader knob and 4 others are not connected to anything.
The radio/cassette do work fine.
I get invalid file extension7440 when I try to attach a pic.

thanks for the replies , I did find info on the fader control on the web, it is an add on made
by Show Chrome for the 89 GL1500 rear speakers. Now i'll , research and see if I can find out
if the 3 unused wires should be attached to something or just extra.

Those aren't 3 unused wires, those are insulated junctions (connections) made to pairs of existing wires.
