Metal plate behind kick stand

Post by fargofour » Mon Jul 20, 2015 3:52 pm

Hi,

On my 98 GL1500 SE there is a metal piece that is one of three pieces that cover the exhaust system on the left side. For the life of me I can't get the piece that sits behind the kickstand out so I can paint it.

Has anyone else removed this piece. On Western Honda's fiche it's on the muffler drawing, part number 16.

thanks,

Bud.

The numbers used on the fiche drawings change from model year to model year. Which part is it in this diagram?

If it's # 13 in WingAdmin picture you have to take off the rear piece first. One of the bolts goes thru both pieces.
His picture says EXCEPT SE and yours is an SE

It's number 16 and you can see there are 2 bolts that hold it on.

Hi,

Not to be an ass, but I'm looking for someone who has actually taken it off. I have all the bolts and nuts removed, both pieces in front of and behind it are off. The problem stems from a mounting point on the inside of the frame rail. I can't see how to remove it without bending the heck out of it.

thanks,

Bud.

I have actually taken it off and put it back on. It must be attached to the header before it is installed. There are actually 4 bolts that hold it on. One is on a long finger that it on top in the front. If it is currently on your bike and you want it off to paint, you will need to remove the 6 manifold bolts on the head and loosen the clamp where the manifold enters the crossover. You can then swing down the header and remove/replace the guard.

Davemilk,

Thanks you, that was what I was looking for. I blowup my starting gears in the rear case of the motor so I had to take the motor out. One way of doing it.

Thanks gain.

Bud.
