reverse now and then

Postby par6647 » Tue Jul 21, 2015 10:42 am

!989 Gold Wing 1500 trike, wheel chair ready, will send pic some time :) ,Symptoms: Engine running, in neutral, move the reverse lever to reverse, neutral light goes off, reverse light comes on, then goes out? While holding the start button down, trike will reverse normally only while the reverse light is on, starter motor stops when light goes out? Works only if holding the start button down while moving the handle? Won't reverse if push button after light goes on? Weird. I have replaced the reverse control unit, no change.

From each start solenoid, there's 2 small wires(by the schematic) that have a part in the reverse monitoring circuit.
Above and to each side of the battery, the print shows a 5 amp fuse for this circuit.
Check these wires and fuses.
Your reverse light is operated from the module...When trying reverse, certain conditions must be met to engage it(that works) and these small wires monitor the voltage/current during operation.Should one circuit fail the reverse will shut off to protect the system. The module resets and tries again.

Hello Virgil, I have located those fuses and checked them twice but will check closer, I have checked all fuses twice. Is the 65 amp reverse fuse, that is supposed to be under the seat, in a holder or box or is it the exposed fusable link I see by the battery? Being a trike nothing is where it should be? That is the one fuse I am not sure I have located? It seems like at 65 amps and the starter runs it is probably good? Thanks Virgil Dave

Get to each fuse, including the big dog bone fuse.the small ones..one should have battery volts during reverse(pink wires),the other one will have some voltage(orange)not much, its in the ground circuit.maybe up to 6 volts.Lower volts=faster motor.
This is controlled by the power control unit and resistor block.
The big fuse is directly grounded an should not have any volts on either terminal.
I think mine is under the seat in a plastic box.there should be a green wire and yellow wire attached to it.

OK Virgil, I am going to check a few things, diodes etc, fuses again. What controls the timer for the reverse indicater light? When it goes off? Wondering why it will run only when that light is on? The reverse light only stays on the normal time when put it in reverse as if you just turned on the key? 3-4 seconds. And it's that time that it will reverse if your holding down the button when you put it in reverse? Dave

About the lamp..it's turned on by the control module you replaced...I can only speculate that the lamp being timed is a function of the module...The control module decides when to turn on the lamp, operate the "A" solenoid, change the resistor load for speed and cancel the reverse operation if it doesn't like a input signal...
I see the motor will turn in step one but it should cancel operating if step 2 of keeping it running is not met...
Kinda like...
Here we go... but if you don't have enough volts, draw enough current or too little by my sensors and I can't self adjust to keep it in normal operation ..I'm gonna give up and shut the whole thing down...just in case something is wrong...Try again later...

The module is checking a preset set of conditions that must be correct for it to continue to operate..A chain of events...
Because yours attempts to move, the mechanical must be OK...The primary electric seems to work...all that's left is either the battery volts falling below a working threshold or a sensor input.
By the way...Does the battery stay above 11.5 volts when reverse does move...I'd hate to think that we missed that or a loose cable.

Hey VIrgil, I am trying to follow you and I think I am. The interesting thing you have mentioned and I have read is the voltage being critical. And I do have a battery that is super bad, won't hold a charge over night, but I have the charger on and the bike running when trying all this so? Do you think it could still be voltage? And I assume the reverse light stays on when working properly? As soon as I get that light to stay on my problem will be fixed I'm sure. I did notice that when moving the reverse handle back and forth a bit to move from the neutral light to the reverse light, it jumps backwards for just an instant when the reverse light comes on but does not keep running until the light goes out, just one quick jump, bike moves about 3"? Not much different but not related to the light as much? Try again tomorrow :)

The bad battery absolutely can be your only problem....A sudden voltage dip when current is drawn is enough to shut off the computer.
Even with a charger hooked up it will not work...You must have at least a continous 100 amp at 12 volts capability at the battery treminals for this to continue to operate...
The module is looking at all that...If the voltage or current change from its requirements,it will shut down.
A jumper box and battery charger are not intended or designed to provide that kind of continous power and volts...
If they were....well,they would be as heavy as a car battery and cables the size of welding cables...
I'll bet if you could see the battery volts fast enough, when the light goes off,the volts probably drop below 9 volts for just a moment then come right back up...

Hey Virgil, fixed that sucker :) Works like a new one. It was the 65 amp fusible dog bone for reverse. The wiring on this is so different, this fuse was way down under crap, upside down, and the yellow wire is covered with a black sheath , tuff one. It is in a brown plastic 4" long box. But that link and one bad diode later and were done. Thanks for your help

Yeaaaaaaaaa.Great job.
Worthy of a mental note what the symptoms and problem was.
