weird noise

Postby RBGERSON » Fri Jul 31, 2015 10:00 am

97 se..I took my front trays out to get a little more air flow for the summer. I am now noticing a not a click, not a whine, but a cchhh----chhh---chhhh or shhh---shhh-shhh--shhh.Like when you push air out your mouth over your tongue and under upper teeth. Does it when the bike is sitting still and when I increase the rpms very slightly it seems to lessen the volume of the sound not pitch and make the chhh's further apart?? I check for engine noise with a mechanic's stethoscope doesn't seem to be there.

I feel like it must be the tach cable but I don't think there is one on the 97 SE???..but the change in sound lessening or slowing down when I increase the engine rpm's has me stumped. One would think it would increase or heighten pitch??? So maybe the tach unit itself???

Any other possibilities???

The two black plastic things that cover the access to radiator and the left side up front..actually just called covers. i don't think they have anytime to do with the noise but I didn't notice it until I removed them.

Hmmm...are you hearing your cooling fan(s) come on? This would be a good source for a whirring noise that would be completely indifferent to the engine RPM, though the sound of a faster engine might easily drown out the sound of the fan.
Some debris, tree leaf, cicada, grasshopper, etc could be caught up a fan cage and chhh chhh chhing as the fan spins??
Just guessing here
Keep the rubber side down.

Doesn't sound like it that low on the bike but worth a look. hard to pin down noises with all the plastic on these bikes...

Just thought, the noise is there when the bike is cold do 1500 fans run all the time, even on first start-up in the morning???

The 1500's do have a noisy air intake, this would be the air being drawn into the engine which is why the box is so thick to try and minimize it. Very noisy when run with air box removed and just the sound of air going into carbs, K&N filters make this worse.

When choke enrichment rods are open and being used noise is increased.

If the air injection hose is not connected underneath air box at right front it will also make a racket like a gurgling sound.
