Rear brake issue 1990 GL1500

Postby n5926g » Sat Aug 08, 2015 8:59 am

Morning guy,s!

I have rebuilt my rear master cylinder, and bled the system(LH front caliper first),and then the rear one...All air appears to be out,and while I DO now have rear brakes, the pedal feels spongy.I ordered a new set of rear pads, but there is a "spacer" attached to the old ones, that evidently is "glued on"...I cant get the spacer off,so compared the thickness of the originals,to the new ones, and they appear to be really close...I can see the caliper pistons with the caliper installed back on the bike.
Im kinda at a stand still here,as until Im satisfied with the rear brake system,I cant put all that crap back on(Exhaust etc).....Need some suggestion as to where to go from here....should I rebuild the rear caliper?....Disc looks fine but it may be worn beyond tolerance...I have no clue.... :o

The more I "ponder" the situation, the more Im thinking the rear rotor is worn out...According to the FSM it is right at minimum service limits...can anyone tell me what a NEW rotor should measure out at?

Have you tried bench bleeding the rear master cylinder?

I did indeed, and it worked fine.I have removed the rear caliper, and ordered a rebuild kit...This bike sat up for around 10 years,so Im figuring the O rings are swollen up.Once I bled the front LH caliper, and then the rear,I did have rear brakes, but am not happy with the play in the pedal. :o

Maybe once you rebuild the rear caliper the brakes will feel better. When I did mine it was kind of frozen up and dragging. Ended up replacing the pins, seals, boots, clips and pistons. Have you also tried to put some weight on the rear brake pedal overnite?
