Alternator

Postby ferns » Mon Aug 10, 2015 8:10 pm

I have the Honda Goldwing GL1500 Interstate 1992. Alternator does not charge battery. It is the 40 amp alternator. Will it make a difference if I put the 90 amp alternator in. It seems a little bigger ;)

The 40 amp alternator will be adequate for your bike if you are not or don't plan to run any extra lighting or accessories. If you have a volt meter installed on your bike you will notice that the 40 amp will not charge at idle and usually doesn't begin to charge the battery until you are around 2000 rpm or so. I found doing a lot of PGR escorts that when riding slow, four way flasher on, cb on, brakes occasionally and maybe fans kicking in that I was running a serious volt deficit and it was killing my battery.

If, you lan to add some stuff to your electrical load you can get many different amp alternators. I switched to an 85 amp with an AGM battery and it seems to handle everything just fine. If you add a 90 amp, maybe think about having an AGM battery to go with it. You will be fine having a 90 amp alternator.

You will see the debate about doubling the 55 amp dog bone fuse if you research this topic. I have not and will not double up the fuse. The wiring is not designed to handle 110 amps.

Anyway, upgrade with whatever larger size amp alternator you want. You will be fine...
