Turn Signal Short

Postby cbond007 » Thu Aug 13, 2015 9:43 am

Hello folks,

I recently purchased a 1993 GL 1500 ASP, love it!
Problem is that it keeps blowing the 15amp fuse! The lights seemed fine early on but have progressed to the point that when I make a signal the fuse instantly blows.
I tested the other controls on that side, 4 ways, horn, hi-low and they work fine until the fuse blows when the signal is engaged!

Any help!!

PS - my radio now seems to be resetting to defaults everytime the bike is restarted! Connection??

The first suspect is a wire pinched or touching the frame, usually at a "add on" circuit like a trailer plug.
The second is the turn signal cancler module in the steering stem or wires feeding it.

Generally the actual wiring never goes bad.Blowing a fuse is a short to ground. The hard part is finding it.
I do have a method that helps.
Remove the blown fuse.In its place, attach a 50-100 watt 12 volt lamp. This can be a driving light, old head light or spot light. It will become your temporary fuse.
When the "short" happens, the lamp simply lights up bright.
This can help narrow down the circuit that's having problems.

Does it blow with either the left or right signal is turned on or just one signal? If not then check the socket the bulb goes into, if it blows with either signal then it is probably a bad wire or ground some where. On my 02 wing a few months after the frame recall was completed it started blowing a fuse every time I would turn on the cruise. Found out the main ground was not properly tightened after the dealer put the bike back together after the frame re weld.

Found the issue, signal switch was grounding against the handle bar! Electrical tape to the handle bar fixed the issue!
