HALP! My bike won't start...WAT DO??

Postby tumunga » Thu Aug 13, 2015 8:11 pm

I pulled my bike into the garage, put it on the lift, and proceeded to change the front tire. At that point, the bike ran. 1 month later, when I finally had time to finish the job, I tried to start the bike, and it won't start.

I swapped the ignition relay with a known good relay (horn), and it still won't start. I checked the ignition fuse, and it's good. I checked to see if the fuel pump was working by putting my ear next to the fuel tank opening, and turning the key on. The fuel pump is running. Now what?

The battery is fully charged.

Thanks in advance for your help.

You said it won't start but we need more information, will it turn over?
Check the reverse lever and the kill switch, make sure the battery connections are tight

Did you accidentally bump the kill switch?

Kill switch is good. I didn't accidentally turn the kil switch to "OFF". Everything is good.

You will need to verify electrically that the kill switch is good. The '89 will turn over "like a bat out of hell" when the kill switch is not in run mode or the switch is otherwise not operating correctly.

Have you had the battery load tested? I realize from your post you must have had it connected to a charger for the last month but is it really good?

Have you checked to see if you are getting spark at the spark plugs?

Have you checked to see if fuel is getting to the carbs and to the engine? Have you pulled plugs to look at them?

How do I need to verify that the kill switch is good? can I hotwire the switch? Gonna check that I get spark at the plugs Sunday, 8/16.

The switch contacts are usually the suspected weak link. You will need to disassemble to switch to test the continuity of the contacts if you do not know where to test continuity of the kill switch wiring.

If you do not have a Honda Service manual, you should see if you can acquire one for your year motorcycle.

And yes, testing the battery is a good step as well. If the battery voltage drops below 10 volts during cranking, there will not be sufficient current to fire the plugs.
