Towbar options for 1988 GL1500

Postby Aussie81Interstate » Sat Aug 15, 2015 9:56 pm

Hi Guys,

Looking for some suggestions to purchase a tow bar for my 1988 GL1500. I have looked locally - and I am unable to locate a local supplier of a tow bar to suit. I have looked on ebay and found a few options -some second hand/used - which could work - and some new ones. From the prices being asked in Australia from an item imported from USA - would be probably cheaper for me to buy one on ebay and have it shipped.

I'm really looking at the cheapest option and any different types of towbar options that you might have, or be aware of. I thought I saw a Markland brand platform style hitch a while ago - but not sure if these were available for the 1500.

Plus if anyone has one they would like to sell and send to me please let me know. Any pictures of your setup would be appreciated. I can fabricate one - but really would like something I can just bolt on and go.

Any responses are greatly appreciated - thank you

Charlie

:)

I have not heard of anyone that has towed a Goldwing with a tow-bar. Can you tell me more about it? Is it recommended by anyone that has done it with any frequency? I really don't know it it is such a great idea.

Hmm,

I thought the post was relatively self explanatory - but however I feel you may have misconstrued my intent.

The purchase or option I was looking for was to install a tow bar on my Goldwing, for the purpose of the Goldwing to tow a trailer, and not to have the Goldwing per-se towed.

:D

You can pick them up new for $200-$250 on a number of sites. I kept my eyes open on Craigslist and Ebay and went with used. Ended up paying $30 for mine and picked up locallly. Not sure what shipping to Australia would cost.

Thanks Bob,

I have been keeping my eyes open on ebay and Gumtree (similar to craiglist) if one turns up locally, but no luck yet. I have a friend who just bought a 1995 GL1500 and his has a trailer hitch. If I cannot get something locally - I will see if I can borrow his and fabricate a copy, but it may well be easier to just buy one from the USA and ship it to Australia.

Thank you for your response. :)

You might look at sites like

http://www.wingstuff.com
and
http://www.cyclemax.com

See if they will ship down under and how much. . . That way you get a brand new towbar/hitch and not one that may be tweeked or twisted up some, that you can not tell until too late. Real bummer on the shipping costs down to you, best of luck.

Thanks for the offer, I have in the last week managed to find a used on in the US that will be sent to me sometime early september, along with some other recent ebay purchases.

I finished up getting one for all up about $250AU delivered - so thought it was worth a punt. Easier than me making one up.

Thanks again - throw the link up here to gumtree. :)
