Electrical Troubles

Postby 88wingrev » Mon Aug 17, 2015 5:06 pm

88 GL1500 is the bike... Having some electrical issues.

Bike starts and runs fine as usual, however...
- no fuel gauge, temp gauge, or RPM gauge reading (dash illumination is fine)
- no reverse indicator or switch operation (lever does engage - bike won't move when engaged)
- no sidestand indicator, but it will still kill the engine as designed when shifted out of neutral
- no brake lights with hand lever, but do work with foot lever
- turn signals all work fine as designed

I've checked fuses and relays beside & under seat on shift side of bike - have a couple new relays to work with.
I'm no mechanic - so any instructions need to be very specific (have used your tutorials before - love the detail!)
Nearest shop is 150 miles away - would sure like to trouble-shoot this myself if possible - with HELP, please!!

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Pick one thing to solve...replace relay 3 first...it supplies power to the tachometer

Also, relay #3 provides power for the fuel and temp gauges...
The brake...Both levers have there own switch...either one operates a relay that turns on the brake lamp...sense one works,I'd suspect that just the other switch is bad...Short the wires together to verify this...It's color code is..green/yellow and white/green..You can disconnect the wires from the switch and touch them together to operate the brake light.
By the way,I see that the side stand circuit is fed power from the same circuit as the gauges...
This is a black/brown wire...It's switched power.

Please check your battery first. Seen a Yamaha yesterday that had the same kind of issues, bad battery. KISS Always do the easy stuff first.

It seems the things that aren't working (and are seemingly unrelated) are grouped together in the front area of the bike. I wonder if there is a connector that is bad, or a piece of harness that has become damaged?
