Vent tubes under bike?

Postby kane67 » Tue Aug 18, 2015 2:45 pm

Hi all!

This is my 6th day of owning 88 GL1500 (first wing to me)
I already changed new speedo cable as needle was wobling a bit, also cruise acted strange.
Now it's good and cruise works also very well.
Today I changed cruise filter and sub-air filter. I wonder what those 3 tubes are what goes under bike.
I think one is from metal pipe ( a bit leftside from fuel cut off valve)? Tube was not connected to that...
But 2 others come somewhere from carburators area...

My question is, should those two tube be blocked by cap? They are, and looks like original...
I opened them, one was empty but the other had some liquid. Can't say what water/fuel mixture it was.

Thanks,

-kane-

All you see is normal.Mine is the same. Those below the bike are "collection tubes" and should be uncapped and drained when the bike is serviced.I do mine each oil change.
The metal crossover tube by the gas cap area on mine had no hose either. Its a carb bowl vent.I did have a problem with humidity accumulating in there and ending up in the carb.I simply added 2foot of hose to it and ran it down hill next to the gas tank.I think the California model has a charcoal canister attached there.
Have you replaced the timing belts yet?....hint hint.

Yep, timing belts were changed 6k miles ago (last year).
Also all others, sparkplugs /airfilter / brake & clucth liquids were done by previous owner.

That bike flies like airship :D

Great to hear.Other than normal service to mine, the best thing I did was add a shift lever stabilizer and a voltmeter in the faring.

If your really bored like I was, pull the alternator and replace the brushes.Mine still charged OK but one brush was near its end.a few hours and a few bucks preventive work.
I also use balancing beads in both wheels too.

If you do pull the alternator make sure to change the rubber bushings in there. not much money but can do wonders
I had replaced my alternator with a higher amp alt, didn't change the bushings as they seemed ok
about 1 1/2 years later the alternator went out during a trip, I also noticed this weird knocking sort of sound when I would take off
when I had my alternator repaired I replaced the bushings and the knocking sound went away

Good tips, thanks!

Next updates will be cruise cable adjustment and accelerator overhaul kit.
Just to make them work as good as possible.
