Changing Alternator on Wing

Postby Wingryder1 » Mon Aug 24, 2015 11:35 pm

One question about changing the alternator on my 94 gl1500. Is there a shortcut to getting to the green/black wire that goes from alternator up under the side shelter. (the plastic behind the reverse gear selector)??

I have had that off during the paint project years ago but really did not want to go that far this time. If I lift up the top shelter a little and remove the reverse gear selector I can bow it out and see where the alternator wire connects but looks like that will not be enough room to unclip and clip in the new wire.
My three options are.. 1.. remove the side shelter whatever work is involved.
2. Just use the old wiring and capacitor on the new alternator.
3. Splice the green/black wire where I can get to it.. and use most of the new wiring.

I am pretty sure this wire in question is the voltage required to excite the alternator.

Read some posts on this change and did not see this mentioned.

thanks
dm

Well no handy tips.. so I did this. Eased the panel out just short of where it might break maybe six inches at bottom.
Put a plastic cup in behind to hold it. Then used a good light and a small screwdriver to release the plug in question.
removed the strain on the panel and waiting for new alternator to arrive.

I took the splice option on mine, with a twist. I just attached another 2-pin plug to the end of the old exciter wire (male or female, I forget which). That way, I can just plug in the new alternator to the new plug on the newly extended wire. The plugs are available at Cyclemax. You just need to be sure to to attach the wire to the correct pin in the plug.

If you don't have one handy, and can't wait for delivery, you could just butt splice the wires for now, and install 2 new plugs when you get them in.

Jay I would think your exciter wire has been extended before as mentioned above. The original wire plugs into a vertical plastic holder with maybe 5 different plugs and it is located up high under the side shelter...

Adding that connector would be both bad and good. Another place to lose continuity is not welcome.. but having it easy to change the next time would be nice. I really think a guy could just leave the org. plug in place and use the stock suppressor and wiring. After all you usually don't have the alternator out because the wiring failed.

And about your "new" 94.. Mine is also a 94. It was wrecked and totaled at 55k. (I bought it in boxes) Now has 130k on it. They need some love along the way but will run and run.

Haha. I need one of these. Does it kick in at 88mph?
