reverse handle would not come down.

Postby tprender » Tue Aug 25, 2015 8:54 pm

Went to use reverse today and could not get the bike out of reverse. The handle would not come down. Tried to rock the bike forwards and back, but it did not help. We went online and found out to take the allen screw out of the handle with the pin. After removing the handle the bike was fixed. My pin was bent like it said in the posts on what to do. What causes the pin to bind? Took a hammer and straighted out the pin and put the handle back on. Until I get a new pin, I will not use reverse. This is the 3rd time that I have used reverse on the bike since getting the bike about 6 weeks ago. The 2 other times the bike had to be turned off to get the handle down, but today that didn't work.

I hardly use reverse, but when I do it's so hard to get the handle to go down. I now won't pull up the lever all the way up or else it gets stuck. Otherwise I need to rock the bike back and forth and pray it goes back down

Usually caused by trying to engage reverse without being in neutral.

The pin is used to prevent movement of the lever without first pulling it outward. If sufficient rotational force is applied to the lever without it pulled all the way out, it can bend the pin, which will then jam the lever and prevent it from being moved, as you have discovered.

i find its hard to get out of reverse if bike is loaded on gear get off button and go back about a few inches by foot that will take the load of the reverse gear and youll be able to take the handle down easy

Had this happen in a slightly busy intersection in Helen, GA this past Thursday. I was pulling my empty trailer (150# worth of weight) so it wasn't overloaded...but it was on a slight slope. Would NOT move forward, back, start et.al. Ended up kicking the lever down with the heel of my boot to get it to go back down. I figured it was broke and it was the end of my trip at that point, might as well get it out of the intersection. Once it went down, it started and I could move forward so at a minimum I'll get it out of the road. Went back into reverse in the parking lot later, and it still works, but won't go the whole way 'up' like it used to. If it was the pin, it was hard enough of a kick to shear it I'm sure.
I'll pull the lever off and looksee what happened and what I damaged kicking it when I get unpacked later. 11hrs to do a 9hr trip still have me worn out. Traffic on I-81 sucked yesterday.
