Cruise control surging

Postby Bobsiler » Tue Aug 25, 2015 11:33 pm

I did a quick search and didn't see anything on this. I have an '88 I bought in March and noticed the cruise control is starting to surge. Tonight it was really bad. I set the cruise and it will accelerate and then let off and repeat again. Any tips on where I should start to look first?

3 things I can think of.
Bouncing spedo.Dry spedo cable and the cruise is having a hard time trying to keep up with the spedo pulse count.
Leaking vacuum line feeding the pull canister.you may also replace the sub air filter.
Cable link loose.Theres adjustments that can be made to tighten the slack cable.
On my 88,I'd set it at 70 and it would vary from 67-74.
Just dry lubed the spedo capable stabilized it.I did notice the spedo needle fluttering above 65.
I still have a bit of lag...haven't gotten to adjust the cables yet.

Thanks a bunch. The speedo has been bouncing and the cable on my list for lube or replacement . I'd have never connected the dots there. I'll give that a shot first.

As virgilmobile said, it's most likely the speedo cable. The cable is cheap and easy to replace, I would replace it if I were you. If you do lube it do not use to much lube, it can ride up the cable and into the speedo housing and cause trouble.

I couldn't get a new cable quick so I pulled the center, cleaned it,flushed the casing and flooded it with spray dry lube graphite.Sprayed the cable and reassembled.
Note:I use dry lube graphite in a spray can.
I will get a new one one day.I suspect that there is wear in mine and the lube job won't last the life of the bike.
It gives me something to do when I'm on Holliday and can't ride.
