40,000 mi. Service Schedule

Postby faithtalker1 » Mon Aug 31, 2015 11:46 am

I know I have posted a lot since I got back, but I am going to take this winter to go over my 1995Se really good. I am the third owner and am almost certain that nothing has been done to the bike, other than my oil changes, new tires. Any good videos for taking off all the cosmetic parts as to not break something? I know how to get some of them off, but not all. I also wouldn't mind some info into what all I should do, should I just check the final drive oil, or change at this point? Flushing and re-fill of coolant? etc... Really appreciate all the hints and help on this site.

Even with 40k miles, consider that the bike is 20 years old and you don't know what has been done. Better safe than sorry.
I would, at a minimum:
- change out all of the fluids (oil, coolant, brake & clutch)
- change out the filters (there are 3 on the SE)
- change the plugs
- check all 3 sets of brake pads and lube while you're there
- change the timing belts

The 3 filters are air filter, sub-air filter and cruise filter. I also forgot the fuel filter.
WingAdmin has done a great job documenting the steps here.

And the oil filter, man that is a lot of filters lol thanks guys. I will be gradually getting together the parts, for a winter project. Also am going to need a bike lift and or jack, I do have a couple new 20 ton house jacks I will not be using anymore due to being retired, so maybe I will just build me something from those to lift the bike for all the maintenance and repairs. :)

If you find a way to make a safe lift using bottle jacks, please let us know. I'm sure that there are lots of people that would be interested.

There's a good discussion here about different lifts and platforms.
One that I like (and plan on building when I have the time) is a platform something like LittleBeaver's platform, but with the main section in 4 pieces that can be individually removed (one under the front wheel, motor and rear wheel) so I could have extra room if needed.

Just make sure that anything you build has attachments for secure straps.
