Engine protector bar

Postby hap2 » Mon Aug 31, 2015 9:36 pm

My highway pegs are bolted to the engine bar on the 1500. One set of pegs need adjusting, but I can't get at the not holding them on becuz the engine bar got bent in just a bit. I can put one finger thru the space between the bar & the motor on the good side, but on the affected side I can't put my finger thru.

The whole bar also is a little loose. Someone suggested putting a couple of washers around the nut holding the bar to the motor to bring it out enuf to adjust it, but I think I'd rather try to bend it back a bit, but I don't wanna break anything.

I'm open to suggestions!

Thanx

If the engine crash bar is bent, I would want it fixed instead of using a "band-aid" of washers.
Try taking it off and getting it straight. If that doesn't work, get another through a parts recycler on eBay.

Thanx Chris,

But how do I take it off? I only see one bolt holding it on, but I'm sure there's more than that.

Here's a diagram from the Service Manual showing bolt locations.

You have to take the lower exhaust covers off, not a hard job. I took mine off and shortened them because the turn out on the bars hit my legs . I cut them down to look more like the ones on the 98thru2000 models.

I agree with the others - the bar protects a very expensive engine, and one that's been bent is badly compromised & weakened. Saving a few dollars now could cost you huge money if the bike goes down onto a weak crash bar. I'd replace it.

Sounds like a good plan to me to replace
