Squealing noise

Postby trashbag » Sun Sep 06, 2015 6:49 pm

My 1995 1500 SE has started a high pitch squeal when I drive about 1/2 hr. It only happens when I am stopped and will cease if I give it a little gas .I don't know much about Goldwings as I was a Harley rider.Could it be the timing belt or the thermostat ? It does run hot but the fluids are all ok.

My guess would be a dry bearing on the timing belt tensioner.
This part:

It does this:

1977 GL 1000 Standard (naked can be good, who knew?)

Thanks I will pull the cover and check it out. Can it be lubricated or do they have to be replaced ?

They are sealed and lubing is not recommended as lubricant can sling and contaminate the rubber timing belts. Replacements are available.

That would be my guess as well, but I would get off the bike and see if you can localize the source of it, just to be sure. It could be alternator bearings as well.

A wooden dowel placed on the cover should Id the problem if it is the tensioners. No need to removed the covers 1st.

Just in case you're wondering, he's talking about a "poor man's mechanic's stethoscope" - you put the wooden dowel against what you want to listen to, and the other end up against your ear. It will conduct the sound of whatever it's touching directly to your ear, and help you localize the source of noises in your engine.
