Turn signal issues

Postby RRR1977 » Wed Sep 09, 2015 8:01 pm

Hey all, quick question for you tech savvy people. I have a 2000 25th Anniversary 1500, and I am experiencing an odd issue with my turn signals that I have never run into on other bikes; my turn signals sometimes slow down. It varies on when it happens, how often, and to which side. Essentially, the light blinks super slow (like 15-20 sec for each iteration, on/off each, or doesn't blink at all, but only stays lit. This usually happens right or left at a single time, like only on the left, but right works fine or vice versa, but tonight it was both sides. They worked fine heading out, but did this coming back. On Saturday, it was the left turn, but not the right. Tomorrow, who knows. There is no "sticking" on the selector switch, and since it changes if, when, and to which side it happens, the only thing I can come up with is the bike is possessed. However, that being a very unlikely cause, I was hoping somebody here had some ideas. Thanks in advance.

I've never had a similar issue, or worked on my signals, but from what you describe, it sounds to me like a flasher relay problem. I believe they are a heat activated device, tied into the resistance of the lamps in the circuit. Since the problem occurs haphazardly, on both sides, and sporadically, I'd start with that flasher. It's the only common device that I can think of. Unfortunately, it is located under the rear trunk, based on my service manual. There are 2 flashers there. One for the turn signals, one for the hazard function.

Before I would dismantle the trunk, I would try cleaning the turn signal stitch with contact cleaner and verify that all of the bulbs are working correctly. :D :D

Most likely it's just a failing flasher relay.

When it does slow down, does it stay on for a long time and then go off and really quickly come back on? Or is it the other way around, where it's off for a long time, then comes on for a brief moment before going off again?

Also, how well does your hazard (4 way) flasher work?

No issues with the 4-way. When it happens, it is usually on, but not blinking, it just stays on. Today, on the way home from work for lunch it did it again. I live <3 miles, and during that time when I turn a turned signal on, it lit, but didn't blink, just stayed link. Over the 2 right turns, and 2 left turns they failed to function properly for all turns but 1 right turn. This morning on the way in, they worked fine.

good morning RRR1977, this sounds goofy, but have you changed the light bulbs? it seems like something somewhere is not making contact all of the time, a bad light bulb will cause this problem. ;) ;)

If the hazards are working fine, then it's not the bulbs. Pretty much a sure thing that it's the turn signal relay that is the problem.
