Urgent: oil blowing out overflow while traveling USA

Postby hondageorge » Fri Oct 09, 2015 7:04 pm

Hey Guys,
Really could use some urgent advice. Traveling on the Interstate into Santa Fe this pm we stopped at Wallyworld and noticed an oil film on my wife's bike who always rides in formation behind me. Closer inspection of my 97 Gl-1500 revealed oil dripping from one of the three rubber overflow tubes on the right side. This oil is blowing back on my wife's bike. A small puddle develops under my GL1500 when it is shut down. The rear of my bike is covered with oil, especially the center stand. I did change the oil & filter the day before, and checked the oil level on the dipstick while on the center stand and NOT SCREWED IN. Any suggestions on what to try to look at? Sure appreciate the help, as we are 2000 miles from home.
thanks guys,
HondaGeorge

On right side. No oil involved

One hose is from battery vent.
2nd hose is carb bowl drain tubes.
3rd hose is carb vent/overflow.

Check your clear plastic drain hoses from air box under left side cover and empty.
This is what I do

Thanks for the suggestions. Will check all and report back in the am during sunlight. I was also thinking that the only thing I changed was to drain & refill the oil & filter, then perhaps I purchased a defective dreaded Fram oil filter?  I'll check all that is suggested, and if I find all is proper, I may just buy another brand of filter and replace the existing Fram filter . Also wanted to ask if draining the PCV tube onthe left side is the only pvc maint. ever required?
My GL owners manual doesn't say anything
about the PCV except to
drain the tube. I'm a long way from home, I hope it's something simple. Will report findings back. Appreciate all of your input.

Check that you didn't miss the oil filter gasket. I.E., the old gasket stuck to the engine when you removed the old filter, and you are running with 2 gaskets on the oil filter. It's happened to me, and others. Easy to miss if you don't specifically verify the that the old gasket came off with the filter. And it will leak. Good luck. Looking forward to the resolution.

Resolution of escaping oil.
I checked the oil filter first to be sure it wasn't double gasketed. A-ok there. Pulled off the right side panels to check the dipstick and oil level. I noticed that the engine was clean and free of all oil spray above the dipstick...which was screwed in and secure. A-ok there.
There was plenty of oil coating the carb drain and battery vent tubes....and everything aft of the drain lines, especially the center stand and rear wheel. Located above the drenched drain lines is the oil fill cap. I touched it and it was very loose. AH-HA!!! My problem solved...oil siphoning out of the oil fill cap. And since we immediately got on the Interstate to head for Santa Fe, we had no pre-warning of an oil leak.
Sure glad we only traveled 45 minutes at hi-way speed and only lost about a pint of oil being siphoned out of the engine before we noticed it at our next stop. Once again, always try the easiest stuff first in troubleshooting. .and think about the last operation you performed on your ride. In my case, it was related...gee, what could possibily go wrong with a simple oil & filter change?
Thanks everyone for your help..your support on this site sure is comforting when your on the bike a few thousand miles from home and I ask for problem solving help. Much appreciated.

I thought the oil dip stick was the oil fill cap. What oil fill are you referring to ?

Hi,

I found an image that will assist (it came from another goldwing site) - the green dots - one on the right is the dipstick, the one below is the filler.
