Alternator charging light?

Postby gerbie53 » Sat Oct 10, 2015 12:38 pm

I have searched the forums and have not found much on this problem. I have a 2000 1500se and it has 40k miles. I recently had to replace the alternator and I wanted to add a alternator light to indicate that the alternator was not charging. I have a 14mm Led light from improvingclassicmotorcycles.com.that I wanted to install in the empty spot in the gauge cluster next to the cruise control indicator lights. There is an empty spot but the space has a black plastic lens over it . Has anyone tried to utilize that empty space? Thanks in advance.

You may use that empty space for an "idiot light" for your purpose, all you need to remove the black plastic; but you can NOT use is that nice LED you have. It must be a incandesce light bulb wired in series with the +B that goes from ingition switch to the alternator, something like a 4W bulb.

How do you get to the black plastic to remove it ? The Led light I purchased is designed to measure the voltage on a wire from the ignition switch and go off at 12.5 volts , so it is not just an Led light but a charge monitoring warning light. I look at the procedure to replace indicator bulbs but I found nothing about the black plastic you are referring to.

V&P Accessories http://www.vpaccessories.com/accessories.htm sells just the thing you need.

In dash installation for that factory look. Solid state unit goes under left pocket and wired to accessory terminals. Socket light goes in unused socket on far right of dash beyond cruise indicator. Instantly warns you if Alternator (charging system) or battery fails. Very important to get early warning, bike MAY run for about 1 hour after failure, early warning gives you time to get to help.

It is an alternator warning light http://www.vpaccessories.com/Altlight.jpg and it goes on the instrument panel exactly where you want to put it.

Why not install a voltmeter instead? I bought an LED waterproof voltmeter from eBay for a few bucks and it works great and it's spot on.

I have volt meters installed. The idiot light in the dash cluster fills the empty hole and will certainly get your attention should something with the charging system go south. To each his own.

702scottc, Do you have any pics of where you mounted the volt meter? And a link to the one you bought ? I looked at the volt meters but there were so many and a lot of them got bad reviews.A meter would also be a nice feature.
