GL1500 cruise won't engage

Postby Kas413 » Mon Nov 09, 2015 1:59 am

I purchased a 1989 Goldwing GL Aspencade 1500 about 1 month ago and the cruise has never worked. When I press the button to turn it on, the light on the dash board does come on, but when pressing the "set" button, it does not engage at all.

Does anyone have a suggestion as how I would go about diagnosing and fixing this?

Thank you, Ken

Lots of info on here for that subject. But to start with the simple things: make sure both hand levers are returning out all the way. You should hear a little click from the micro switches. Do the same with the foot brake pedal. These are the most common things that will keep the cruise from setting (its being told to disengage). My '95 was the switch for the foot pedal. That switch is very hard to get to, hidden behind rear master cyclinder.
start with the simple things, and hope you dont need to dig in too deep.
1 other thing: it wouldnt hurt to replace the cruise filter. Most likely has never been changed anyway cuz most people dont even know about it.

Hello
my 88 was doing the same thing .I checked for the clicking on the clutch and brake handles and it was there, both clicks were noticeable on the clutch lever. I checked all the other triggers also and could not get it to operate. finally as I was riding I pushed the clutch lever out harder and it engaged. I used some metal tape as a diagnostic on the lever at the contact point has worked every time. just proves hearing the clicks does not mean its making contact. I am going to replace the lever as there is a divot at the contact point.
just my 2 cents worth. hope you get it figured out.

Thank you both for your input. I will take what you have provided and see about searching for solutions this weekend - as long as it does not rain...

Thanks,
Ken

If you're speedometer is not steady, jumping around, the cruise will not engage. Simple cheap fix in that case...replace the speedometer cable. Just had the same exact problem.

Had to clean mine with electrical contact cleaner. Resume sometimes takes a couple of pushes on the button to work properly, then works the rest of the day just fine..
Enjoy the ride. They are all good, just some better than others.

Thanks again for the input.

As for the cruise filter, where is it?

As for the micro-switches, I press on both the hand and foot break and I can hear switching on and off at both levers. As for the clutch lever, I am not sure it actually belongs on the bike, or the bushing inside it is worn out because the handle will pop out a little when slowly releasing it, and it has vertical play in the handle itself.

As for the speedo, mine appears to be steady, but I will keep a closer eye on it when I take it out again.

As for the electrical contact cleaner, what parts did you clean and how?

The cruise filter is on the left side. Pretty much behind the reverse lever. I doubt the filter is keeping the cruise from setting but maybe. Might as well change it anyway. Theres a real good step by step on here, with pictures.

From the sound of the clutch lever, I'd suspect it. You could try holding out on the lever while trying to set cruise and see if it'll set.

And as was stated, just becuz the micro switches are clicking, doesnt always mean theyre working. If the switch is bad..... but the click will let you know its not stuck.

I have the same problem as Kas413 with my 1989 1500 but with a twist. My bike will set cruise, decelerate/accelerate, clicks off at all switches BUT in 4th gear only. Now the bulbs in the dash are new all OE incandescent type bulbs. I switched the wires to see if that little speed fix would work, the only thing that happens is the OD light comes on in 4th but in 5th nothing! Suggestions? 5th gear/OD switch? Checked fuses & relays nothing. :?:

If you swapped the wires and the OD light comes on in 4th, but it does not come on when the wires are connected normally and you are in 5th - AND your cruise is not working when you're in 5th, then that's a pretty good indication that something is wrong wither with the gear position switch (specifically the contact for 5th gear) or, more likely, the wiring for 5th somewhere in between the gear position switch and the dash/cruise computer.

Where did you swap the wires?

You guys are AWESOME!!!!! Thank you all for your input, suggestions, and help. It works!!

I taped the clutch switch, replaced the main cruise filter today, and ordered the sub filter, which will be in this week; I will put it in as a course of maintenance.

But, it took more time to take all the tuperware (plastics) off than it did to do replace the filter. And while I was in there, I checked the air filter, squired the carbs with a little carb cleaner, and got a little more familiar with what is where....

Thank you again for all your help.....

Ken

A lawn mower filter element (i used a briggs and stratton) and a knife or scissors will make several sub air and cruise filters. Easier and cheaper than ordering the 'correct' ones.

Glad its working! Always a plus to be able to familiarize yourself with the bike too. Can save lots of money from staying out of stealerships and shops too. And that equals more chrome and goodies.

Glad I could contribute. Although, most of what Ive learned about the GL1500 is from reading on this site and tinkering in the garage.
